The Monaco Grand Prix is the most prestigious race of the Formula One season. It first took place in 1929 when it was won by William Grover-Williams driving a Bugatti.
Since then it has been won by many of the most famous names in the sport, but only 14 drivers have won the race on more than one occasion.
British drivers Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart are tied on three wins each. Moss first won in Monaco in 1956 while Stewart’s last win came in 1973, but neither driver can match the achievement of fellow Briton Graham Hill.
Hill won the race five times between 1963 and 1969, earning him the title the King of Monaco. However, even Hill’s record is eclipsed by the legendary Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna who was first to the chequered flag no less than six times.
Senna‘s first win came in 1987 and was followed by five consecutive victories between 1989 and 1993 – the year before his tragic death in the San Marino Grand Prix.
Last year’s Monaco Grand Prix was won by Nico Rosberg, ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, and both will be among the favourite’s for this year’s race which takes place on May 24.
