The Tantivy, in the market town of Dulverton, was established in 1939 and was acquired by the present owners in 2006. It occupies a prime location with frontages and entrances on three of the town’s main roads. The business also benefits from a south-facing courtyard seating area opposite a main public car park.

The shop and deli, which attract strong year-round trade, offer news agency, tobacconist and confectionary ranges alongside a wide array of products including wines, ciders, cheeses, and much more.

The café serves tea and Barista coffee, together with a menu featuring locally sourced ingredients, throughout the year. It benefits from a full on and off licence and an entertainment licence enabling new owners to open until 11pm should they wish to extend the current hours into the evening.

The business is largely staff-run with a workforce of five full-time, five part-time and twelve casual staff. The annual wage bill is currently £125,000 but this could be reduced by around £40,000 if the new owners chose to take a hands-on approach to the business.

The gross profit for the year ended March 2014 was £239,147 with and excellent adjusted net profit of £90,452, after rent of £30,000.

The building, which dates from 1650, has been exceptionally well maintained and is presented to a high standard throughout. In addition, the current owners have undertaken a complete renovation of the property, including the creation of four letting apartments above the business with full residential planning permission and independent access.

“This is a great opportunity for new owners to take on a successful, long-established business in this thriving community and southern gateway to Exmoor National Park,” said Charles Darrow Director, Paul Heather.

“The Tantivy has an enviable reputation in the local area and beyond and would suit someone looking to purchase a profitable lifestyle business in a superb location with a strong year-round local and visitor trade.”
